How to compress an image

Choose a simple preset or fine-tune the result.

  1. Add JPG, PNG or WebP images.
  2. Choose high quality, balanced, smallest size, custom quality or a target size.
  3. Run compression and compare dimensions, bytes saved and visual quality.
  4. Download the results you want to keep.

How image compression works

The tool re-encodes supported images and can use repeated quality adjustments to approach a target size.

  • Exact target size cannot always be guaranteed without unacceptable quality loss.
  • Target-size mode may reduce pixel dimensions when quality changes alone cannot approach the target; the result dimensions are shown.
  • PNG export is lossless in this browser path, so quality presets do not change PNG compression; target-size mode can only reduce a PNG further by downscaling it.

Good reasons to compress

Smaller images upload faster and use less storage and bandwidth.

  • Meeting a 500 KB, 1 MB or 2 MB upload limit.
  • Speeding up web pages and email attachments.
  • Reducing a batch of photos before sharing or archiving copies.

Start balanced, then inspect

The best setting depends on image content and display size.

  • Check faces, gradients, text and fine patterns at 100% zoom.
  • Review the reported result dimensions because target-size mode can downscale the image.

Compression without server storage

Images are compressed locally in your browser without a server upload.

  • Processing time and capacity depend on your device.
  • No image name or content is included in optional usage measurements.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you guarantee an exact target size?

The tool searches for a close result, but some images cannot reach an exact limit while remaining usable.

Does compression change dimensions?

Quality-only presets keep dimensions. Target-size mode may downscale when quality adjustments alone cannot approach the requested size, and the result reports its actual dimensions.

Why is the result not smaller?

The source may already be highly optimized or the selected quality may be too high to save space.
