A smaller file is not guaranteed: this simple PNG may be smaller than a JPG. JPG is useful for photographs; PNG preserves sharp graphics and transparency. Converting to JPG removes transparency.

Why did the file become larger?

Compression depends on the picture, format and quality. Flat-colour graphics often compress well as PNG. Choose a format based on the content and compare actual bytes, not just the extension.
